On the third
Wednesday of every month the Junior Rockhounds meet at the Pipal Park
Community Center. During the regular
club meetings the kids learn lapidary arts and rock related crafts. Among the projects we have completed are: Agate slab wind chimes Cabochon making Fossil horn coral grinding and
polishing Clay Valentines Making garden bricks with names Wire wrapping sharks teeth Wire wrapping arrowheads Occasionally we
also have a “special event” such as the sapphire hunt we held last
January—many very cool Montana sapphires and garnets were found in the gravel
we imported from the Gem Mountain Sapphire mine. The kids also are
welcome to bring their finds in to the adult members to be identified and can
participate in the adult club activities wherever it appeals to them. They especially like the silent auction
night. These intrepid
explorers quest for specimens and fossils (not to mention interesting bugs
and other wildlife) during our youth group rock hunts. The youth group has 2 or more hunts each
summer. One parent from each family
group goes along to help ride herd. New members are
always welcome to join in the fun. |
